Abstract

The simplest structures in which the units are joined in the same way as they are most commonly found in biopolymers, are disaccharides, such as cellobiose and maltose. Conformational formulae (Fig. 3.1(a) (b)) give the most complete representation; but sometimes when discussing structure and configuration it is convenient to leave aside the question of conformation and use Haworth formulae (Fig. 3.1(c) (d)).
