Abstract
The death rate from tuberculosis in the British Isles fell from 40 to 1 per 100 000 during the last thirty years. Most of this improvement was due to the introduction of antituberculosis drugs. The gradual decline in mortality since the beginning of the century reflects the rise in the standard of living, with better housing and nutrition (Figure 5.1). Figures from Western Europe and North America show a similar trend.
