Abstract

Patients with cancer frequently have an increased serum calcium concentration. Hypercalcemia can occur at any point in the course of the disease and may be the first clue to the presence of malignancy. The condition can be clinically silent and detected only by automated multiphasic blood chemistry determinations; conversely, it can be the most debilitating aspect of the disease. The disorders of calcium homeostasis that underlie this condition are similarly varied. Fortunately, a variety of therapeutic modalities is available for patients who require reduction of their serum calcium.
