Lincomycin and Clindamycin

  • Chapter
Antibacterial Drugs Today

Abstract

Lincomycin derives its name from Lincoln, Nebraska. The antibiotic was isolated from a soil organism Streptomyces lincolnensis found in this area and it was first introduced in 1963. Lincomycin differs chemically from most other available antibiotics. One of its derivatives, 7-chloro-7-deoxy-lincomycin, now known as clindamycin, is superior in antibacterial activity and is also better absorbed following oral administration.
