Abstract

Any effort at understanding a process so large and complex as that which was experienced in Chile under the Unidad Popular (UP) Government requires careful reflection to ensure the theoretical approach needed in gaining scientific knowledge. 9. Nevertheless, the problem of the middle classes involves much more than the economic behaviour of small and medium-sized producers. In this sense, the programme did not go far enough, but this will be discussed further from the political and economic viewpoint.
