Abstract
Any effort at understanding a process so large and complex as that which was experienced in Chile under the Unidad Popular (UP) Government requires careful reflection to ensure the theoretical approach needed in gaining scientific knowledge. Nothing could be more alien to such an effort than an apology for, or an accusation against, such an experience.

Nevertheless, the problem of the middle classes involves much more than the economic behaviour of small and medium-sized producers. In this sense, the programme did not go far enough, but this will be discussed further from the political and economic viewpoint.
Because the candidate did not obtain an absolute majority, he had to be appointed by the National Congress.

It could be argued that this was also due to the limited theoretical insight into this contradiction, which at that time existed among those responsible for the UP economic policy. [The Editor]
