Reduction in Dopaminergic Activity in the Rat Carotid Body after Acute or Chronic Almitrine

  • Chapter
Chemoreceptors in Respiratory Control

Abstract

Almitrine is a long-lasting respiratory stimulant the effect of which is abolished by peripheral chemoreceptor denervation in rats, cats and dogs, indicating that the drug could act through the peripheral arterial chemoreceptors (Dhillon, 1980: Laubie and Diot, 1972: Laubie and Schmitt, 1980: Majcherczyk et al., 1984). In addition, an increase in the carotid sinus nerve afferent activity has been recorded during intravenous or intracarotid injections of almitrine (Bisgard, 1981: Laubie and Schmitt, 19 80: Majcherczyk et al., 1.984: Roumy and Leitner, 1981).
