Abstract

Marble has been widely used in Turkey throughout its history as an ornamental and building stone. Figure 1 shows the locations of some of the ancient towns in Western Turkey, where in the past marble was used as one of the main building materials. The Beylerköy quarry is a disused ancient quarry located to the east of the village of Beylerköy and was one of the four quarries supplying the ancient town of Teos, of marble for building purposes and for export. The Beylerköy marble has colors varying from dark grey to white on a greenish or greenish pink background. It is composed of recrystallized limestone and of limestone breccia.
