Abstract
Hermann Grassmann wrote his Ausdehnungslehre (1844) in partly philosophical language. If we are to understand his original ideas, we will have to concern ourselves with the philosophical implications of and the background to his works. What, then, was the exact nature of his philosophy? Since Grassmann did not present us with a work of philosophy in the narrower sense of the word we will only be able to understand indirectly what he has to say to us. In addition we will have to examine the cultural context in which his work was carried out.
