The Australian Family as an Expression of Modernity

Abstract

Families in Australia are quintessentially European. They are European in origin, in structure and in demographic characteristics. As also in Europe, the family in Australia is self-consciously examined and analysed, in a way that would be uncharacteristic of most non-European societies. Its place in the social structure is no longer taken for granted, though “common knowledge” typifications of “the family” (Schutz & Luckmann, 1974) still pervade much of the public debate in this International Year of the Family, 1994.
