Evidence for Recombination in Magnaporthe Grisea Rice Pathogens: A Case Study from the Indian Himalayas

Abstract

The balance between asexual, clonal reproduction and recombination in microbial populations and their relative contributions to population structure and dynamics is a topic of hot debate (see Tibayrenc et al., 1991 and Maynard Smith et al., 1993). Many fungi are capable of both asexual and sexual reproduction, but it is not clear under which circumstances their sexual recombination potential is expressed (Lenski, 1993; Kohn 1995). Fungi that previously were thought to reproduce exclusively asexually in nature have been shown to have population structures more consistent with populations to which recombination contributes significantly (see Burt et al. 1996; Geiser, et al. 1994).
