Abstract

Let us appreciate Paul Ramsey for who he was: a generous but rigorous critic who tenaciously introduced the best of Judeo-Christian tradition, the theme of covenant faithfulness, into contemporary moral reflection on the practice of medicine and research. Like you and I he was a product of his time, subject to the boundaries of his context. But he modeled a remarkable openness, he pushed for an ever-widening circle of conversation and argument, and he was humble enough to change his mind and to tell us exactly why he did so. Contemporary social critics may speak of a proceduralism in which interpretation submits to actual discourse. Paul Ramsey lived it.
