Abstract
It is widely accepted that rates of decay and soiling of stone monuments have accelerated in the last century. Soiling is an optical effect, a darkening of the surface that can be measured as a change in light reflectance (Newby et al 1991). Black crusts are among the most studied patterns of deterioration in historical buildings.
