Guidelines for Competitive Athletes with Arrhythmias

Arrhythmias and Sudden Death in Athletes

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 232))

Abstract

Guidelines for athletic participation are needed to recognize athletes at risk for arrhythmias and to prevent sudden cardiac death and reduce the risk for arrhythmia-related morbidity. Few available data exist that have been obtained from well-designed, prospective studies to determine whether certain arrhythmias increase the athlete’s risk for sudden death or cause significant symptoms, such as syncope or presyncope. It is often difficult to determine the significance of a specific cardiac rhythm disturbance in assessing an athlete’s eligibility for competitive sports. Sudden cardiac death is rare in young people (1, 2); its incidence is estimated to be <1% of that in adults (3). Nonetheless, a significant proportion of these deaths occurs in relation to exercise. Death related to sports is always a shocking event and the recent premature and sudden cardiac deaths of elite athletes have focused attention on athletes with known arrhythmias (4).
