Abstract

To define an expression is to introduce it into a language by specifying its meaning or its use in terms of those expressions which are already available in the language in question. This formulation covers all varieties of definitions with the exception only of the so-called axiomatic and ostensive definitions. Definitions in a more restricted sense are singled out by calling them normal.
