Joining of Silicon Nitride Ceramics to Titanium Alloy with an Interlayer

Abstract

Silicon nitride ceramic was joined to titanium alloy TiA16Mo3Cr2FeSi with active AgCu-Ti based brazing alloy. Mo and 18Cr8Ni stainless steel interlayers were chosen to reduce residual stresses in the bonding zone. The effect of the interlayer material and thickness, brazing temperature and brazing time on shear strength of the joints and morphology of fractured surfaces was investigated and evaluated. Average shear strength of 195 MPa and Weibull modulus of 8.7 was calculated from statistical data for joints with a 0.5 mm thick 18Cr8Ni stainless steel interlayer brazed in the temperature range from 1073 to 1098 K and time interval from 15 to 30 min. The microstructure of the joints was observed by SEM and the distribution of elements in the vicinity of the joints was analyzed by EDS.
