Part of the book series: Catalysis by Metal Complexes ((CMCO,volume 14))

Abstract

The catalytic chemistry of organometallic complexes usually depends on coordinative unsaturation. Most substrates can only bind if an empty orbital is available on the metal to receive it. One way in which photochemistry can facilitate catalysis is to generate coordinative unsaturation by photoextrusion of a ligand. Photoextrusion of CO and H2 are both well recognized in stoichiometric reactions and so it is not surprising that catalytic chemistry has also been seen in these systems.
