Granular Packing under Vibration

  • Chapter
Physics of Dry Granular Media

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 350))

Abstract

Granular assemblies under vibration exhibit a very rich phenomenology. The apparent behavior is reminiscent of usual solid, liquid or fluid states. Using a minimal amount of concepts and a very crude representation of local granular interactions, we discuss the emergence of specific phenomenons such as fluidization, convection, heaping, the sub-harmonic instability and the Faraday instability.
