Abstract

Russia is rich in water resources. Extensive annually renewable runoff to the rivers of more than 4263 cubic km is available in our country, in addition to slowly renewable (“ancient”) water resources, with volumes that exceed 60,000 cubic meters. The latter should be regarded as a possible reserve for future water supply. However, the distribution of the river runoff is extremely uneven within the territory of the country. Less than 8% of the total annual volume of the rivers’ runoff falls to the basins of the Caspian and Azov Seas, where more than 80% of the Russian population lives.
