Abstract

Multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), known as sequential system failure in the early years, had been initially described by Tilney et al. [1] in 1973. With improvement in recognition, the concept of MODS has been revised unceasingly. It has been known as progressive sequential multiple organ failure (Baue 1975), multiple organ failure (Eiseman 1977), multiple system organ failure, MSOF (Fry 1980). In 1991, a conference of the American College of Chest Physicians/Society for the Critical Care Medicine (ACCP/SCCM) termed this syndrome multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, MODS, which has been employed until now [2]. In China, t the national conference on critical care medicine held in October 1995, the concept of MODS was determined to replace MSOF. MODS are defined as a clinical syndrome, sequential dysfunction of more than two separate systems or organs within 24 h caused by various factors, both infective and non-infective (trauma, burns, pancreatitis, etc.) [3].
