Unveiling White Privilege

Abstract

As Jon and I sat in his office, he began our first conversation by talking about his childhood experiences. He said: I grew up in England in the 1950s and 1960s, in a working-class family with a mother, a father, an elder brother and elder sister. My father was 55 when I was born in 1949. That meant he was born in the Victorian era, in the height of colonialism and lived through two world wars. He died at the age of 74 just before I went off to university. We were traditional; my father worked, my mother was the homemaker. I came from a family where kindness and caring for people was important. My parents’ loving environment gave me the tools to develop an orientation towards human rights.
