Part of the book series: Civic and Political Education ((CIEDV,volume 2))

Abstract

Although citizenship is a concept that has been discussed over the time since Plato and Aristotle, recently, especially after the 1990’s, it has been given a renewed attention. Osler and Starkey (2006) identified six key contextual factors that help explain the considerable growth in interest in citizenship education over the past decade. These are global injustice and inequality, globalization and migration, concerns about civic and political engagement, youth deficit, the end of the cold war and anti-democratic and racist movement.
