Abstract
Critical literacy is a Freirean project of “reading the world” (Freire & Macedo, 1987; cited in Luke, 2012) through the deconstruction of texts with a focus on power imbalances and social inequities. Hilary Janks, a South African teacher educator and scholar of critical literacy, has been active in the field of critical pedagogy for over two decades. Throughout her work, she asks important questions about the possibilities of critical literacy for student engagement and social change.
