Abstract

Language is of utmost importance in a multicultural and multiracial society like Singapore. Thus, since our founding years, the Singapore Government has placed great emphasis on language policy to unite Singaporeans in a bid to enhance the competitive edge of the people. In various stages, the language policy has been refined according to sociopolitical and economic needs. The evolvement of the education system in Singapore can be divided into four stages, namely, the survival-driven stage (1959–1978), the efficiency-driven stage (1979–1996), the ability-driven stage (1997–2010), and the values-driven stage (2011–present).
