Abstract

This paper reported the surface settlement-time relationship due to shield tunneling in gravelly soils. Field data monitored during the construction of Taoyuan International Airport MRT, Hukou power-cable tunnels, and Beijing Metro Line 1 tunnels were collected and analyzed. Based on the field data, the hyperbolic model was proposed to simulate the settlement-time relationship above the centerline of the tunnel. Based on the field measurements, it was found that the settlement-time relationship due to shield tunnelling could be property approximated with the hyperbolic model. The hyperbolic constant 1/a represented the surface settlement that occurred during the first day after the face of shield passed the monitoring sensor. For shield tunnelling in gravelly soils, the mean of initial settlement speed was 2.5 mm/day. The constant 1/b represented the long-term ultimate settlement due to shield tunnelling. For tunnelling in gravelly soils, the measured maximum settlement was only 4.70 to 8.06 mm. These values were much lower than the long-term settlements due to shield tunnelling in clay, and clay-and-sand grounds. The reason for these extremely small settlements was most probably due to the high stiffness and strength of the gravelly soils.
