Abstract
This chapter describes the past and current development of Chinese as a second and foreign language in the education sector. It presents a brief history of the development of teaching Chinese as a second and foreign language (TCSL/TCFL), the recent development of policies and local practices of TCSL/TCFL, and the current state of research in TCSL/TCFL to help readers who are interested in this issue understand the investigative context of this book, and to highlight the significance of the role of Taiwan in TCSL/TCFL.
