Abstract

The transient stability of slopes during pile driving at the slope crest was analyzed using the upper-bound limit analysis method based on a nonlinear failure criterion. The pile-driving force was regarded as a concentrated force and the work rate done by the concentrated force was considered. The rotational logarithmic spiral discontinuity mechanism was adopted for calculation. The influences of nonlinearity coefficient, pile diameter and pile location were investigated through the study of a calculation example. From the numerical results, it is found that the safety factor decreases during the earlier stage of pile driving, and then significantly increases upon the pile tip reaching the sliding surface. After the pile tip passes through the failure surface, the safety factor remains unchanged. Nonlinearity coefficient, pile diameter and pile location have significant effects on slope stability. The results of this study may provide suggestions and guiding references for addressing engineering problems in practice.
