Abstract

In this chapter, a Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE) based on permanent magnet DC motor controlled by Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) is proposed to satisfy the further study of the wind energy conversion system (WECS) in the laboratory. The main objective of the emulation system is to reproduce the dynamic behavior of the wind turbine torque on the generator shaft. The electrical, mechanical, aerodynamic models of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) are analyzed in detail. The control of a permanent magnet DC motor and the mathematical models of the wind turbine are elaborated using Matlab/Simulink environment. Simulation and experiment results are also presented to demonstrate the functionality and effectiveness of the system and to confirm that a WTE can provide all necessary parameters of the wind turbine system such as wind speed, output torque, power coefficient and tip speed ratio.
