Abstract
This introductory chapter situates the reader in the study. The impetus for this study began with the Dr Patel tragedy in Bundaberg Queensland. Between 2003 and 2005, 30 of Dr Patel’s patients died. As a result, there was a community backlash towards overseas trained doctors in Australia. This study set out to explore the experiences of IMGs in an Australian context. The conception of the research is outlined and explained. Against a backdrop of fieldwork, the Australian health system and the positioning of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) within is explored. Participants are introduced and the data set explained.
