Abstract

Robust control theory deals explicitly with the uncertainties in the characteristics of the aircraft and in the environment in which it has to operate. A modern approach to robust control is H optimal control. Generally, uncertainty in a model is present at various components and is in this way highly structured. The influence of the structured uncertainty on system performance can be analysed by applying μ-analysis. A combination of the techniques of H optimal control and μ-analysis is known as μ-synthesis. This method has been applied to the design of an Autopilot for RCAM, using μ-synthesis inner-loop controllers. The formal criterion of the μ-synthesis method could not be met by these controllers. However, the resulting design performs rather well.
