Abstract

The coagulation kinetics of four silica hydrosols, each monodisperse with respect to discrete silica particle sizes (44.8 nm, 101 nm, 180 nm, and 515 nm) were investigated in the presence of LiCl, KCl and CsCl, respectively, by photon correlation spectroscopy. The concentration range of the electrolytes varied from 10−2 up to 1.5 mol dm−3, thus covering the region of slow coagulation followed by that of rapid coagulation. The stability ratio as dependent on the electrolyte concentration was determined. The dispersion with the smallest particles was found to be the most stable.
