Abstract
Small-angle neutron scattering provides a valuable technique for the study of adsorption at interfaces. It is particularly valuable for particles in nonaqueous media where the surfactant is present during particle formation and, hence, is an essential factor to ensure colloid stability of the dispersion. The method of contrast variation, using mixtures of hydrogenated and deuterated solvents can be used and from the data obtained an analysis of the amount adsorbed estimated. This technique is also applicable to micelles and work is described on 6-(eicosyldimethylammonio) hexanoate. In addition, neutron reflectivity studies on the latter material at the air-water interface are described; these studies allow a comparison to be made of the area occupied at a micelle surface and at a planar interface.
