Abstract
Winters in the American Midwest are not for the faint of heart. Anyone from Michigan or Illinois or Minnesota or Wisconsin will attest to this. But the winter of 2011 was particularly grim in Madison, Wisconsin, in part because it stretched on for so long. The month of February was the coldest one people could remember, with sub-zero temperatures freezing the world into place long after people had the teeth for it. Hearty Midwesterners, not prone to hyperbole, looked at each other through hollowed eyes as the freezes kept coming.
