Abstract
The opening chapter provides a context for subsequent chapters by offering a broad introduction to the social science literature on neoliberalism and highlighting what makes the approach taken in the book different to previous work on the topic. Crucially, the chapter outlines the key features of assemblage thinking—composition and holding together of heterogeneous elements, exteriority of relations and agency and power—and their implications for theorizing neoliberalism. The final section of the chapter outlines the major themes of the book—(I) Expertise, (II) Practices and (III) Subjects—and provides a brief overview of how each of the contributions engages with aspects of assemblage thinking.
