Abstract

Identity, Justice and Resistance in the Neoliberal City is an account of the current neoliberal restructuring of cities, and its impact on the rise and spread of different forms of resistance and uprising in various cities throughout the world. Since the Arab Uprisings in 2011, many urban movements, uprisings and forms of resistance have been seen in countries including Brazil, Turkey, the USA, Greece and Spain. Although they have arisen in different cultural areas and feature a range of grievances, this resistance places the city, city life and the spatial justice inside it at the centre of contentious politics. This collection explores the kind of impacts the neoliberal making of cities is having in terms of everyday life, the sense of belonging, housing rights and the spatial use of the city, especially from the perspective of the different social categories living inside it. Through close ethnographic studies, the book illuminates the strategies adopted for everyday life and the different types of resistance that have emerged in response to the neoliberal making of cities.
