Abstract
Hemy VII and Queen Elizabeth observed the wedding of Prince Arthur to Katherine of Aragon on Sunday, November 14, 1501, from a latticed closet constructed high in the vault above the consistory of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The night before, the king and queen had secretly moved to a private residence adjoining St. Paul’s from which they entered the cathedral unseen. The huge interior was splendidly decorated: the altar displayed plate, jewels, and relics, and the choir walls were hung with rich arrases. A walkway covered with red the west door to a specially constructed stage that permitted guests to view the groom and bride from the moment they entered the Cathedral through the sacrament of marriage.
