Abstract
More than perhaps any other contemporary social movement, the Christian Bight is ingrained in the fabric of American state politics. Its influence is felt in nearly every state and its impact is clear in the Republican Party and in public policy decision making. Christian Right supporters form the backbone of the activist and volunteer cadre in the Republican Party and have rebuilt local parties in many areas. Movement supporters have been elected to all levels of state and local government—from school boards to the state legislature—and many activists have become lobbyists who use their expertise to influence a wide variety of political issues and policies. Thus Christian Right activists are clearly well integrated into state politics and they are exerting influence on public policy at all levels.
