Abstract
The manufacturing network in East Asia is a marvel of globalization, allowing the region to produce a vast range of world class goods. The key is the outsourcing of billions of different parts and components to factories spread across the region. In short, we can think of this as ‘Factory Asia’. This was set up by East Asian corporations and the corporations are Factory Asia’s ‘mid-level managers’ and middle management is doing a marvellous job. A potential problem lies in the fact that Factory Asia has no ‘top-level’ management.
