Abstract
When Sir John Lubbock introduced the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, he did so in recognition that the profit motive of industrialists had pared away leisure time to unacceptable degrees.
Working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vocation.
Winston Churchill (1874–1965)
