Abstract
These two extracts usefully summarise the origins of the European Union and its gradual progress as what I will refer to as a supranational regional regime (SRR) during the second half of the twentieth century. This book is partly about this development, while also being about the ideational, or ideological, underpinnings and motivation involved. That is, it is about supranationalism, a doctrine which was by the end of the century far from being confined to Europe.
