Abstract
Most of the people in Third World countries live in rural areas, most of them are engaged in agriculture and the majority are poor. Hence giving agriculture high priority in development has an intuitive appeal. Indeed it can be argued that in terms of population, employment and production agriculture is the most important sector of the economy (see Table 6.1).
