Abstract

Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (1902–1989), the leader of the revolution that overthrew the Shah of Iran in 1979, succeeded in establishing a theocratic state. Forbidding in manner, cunning in strategy, and merciless toward his enemies, Khomeini dominated the new Islamic state, his unsmiling face seemingly everywhere.
