Critical Issues in the Independence Struggle

Abstract

Throughout East Timor’s struggle for independence, the resistance changed shape on a number of occasions. In part, this was in response to changing external influences, and in part, in response to changing internal conditions and requirements. In large part, however, the struggle increasingly came to take on the character of a particularly Timorese approach to organization, solidarity, and shared commitment. But the path it took to achieve this outcome was sometimes varied, and there were often divergences within it that led to much bitterness.
