Abstract
The concept of above or below the line occurs in many contexts. In bridge scoring, for instance. There are of course many other important “line” references. The British army has the “thin red line”. In rugby you line up at “line-outs”. Organizations try to be aligned so that they all point in th same direction. If you “step out of line” you may be given lines. You “draw a line” in the sand.
