Abstract
Given its dual orientation throughout the postwar period as a socialist state and one of the rival German states and part-nations, the former communist East Germany (GDR) is in a unique position in confronting contemporary globalization. The collapse of state socialism and the unification of Germany on terms set by the West Germany (FRG) has left the GDR community exposed to globalizing cross-pressures and accelerated societal change. This chapter identifies some of the forces of change and discusses the way in which these might impact on eastern German identity.
