Abstract
Empirical analysis has shown the saliency of the territorial dimension of party politics in Western Europe. We have seen that there is substantial electoral differentiation between political levels. As territorial party systems have grown apart in recent decades, government formation in the different arenas has become more incongruent. Statewide parties have to come to terms with this increase of asymmetry in party competition. The parties have responded in quite different ways. What drives these developments?
