Abstract
Aspects of sexuality in mainstream tourism have gained academic attention; however, in the main, discussions of sexuality and tourism have focused on the experiences of gay men (Hughes, 2002; Visser, 2003; Hughes and Deutsch, 2010; Melián-González et al., 2011; Waitt and Markwell, 2006, this volume). Gay men1 have increasingly been identified as a profitable market by the travel and tourism industry. Their alleged economic power has led both industry and scholars to recognise gay communities as a niche market with a high propensity to take holidays (Holcomb and Luongo, 1996; Pritchard et al., 1998; Roth, 2004; Ersoy et al., 2012). For gay tourists, sexual identity plays an important role in defining travel and holiday patterns; the need to escape from everyday social restrictions attached to homosexuality and constructing identities becomes a catalyst for gay tourism.
