Abstract

The 11 chapters contained in this book consider the past, present, and future prospects of teacher unions in the United States, Canada, and England. The case studies manage the balance between specificity and universality in different ways. Some provide only limited treatments of how local context shapes union agendas, instead of emphasizing the lessons that may be learned across contexts. Other chapters foreground context, underscoring how individual and collective social commitments, histories, relationships, and political dynamics form the basis for particular organizational directions. Some make no claim of universality in their depictions of specific circumstances, while others situate the particular in more general contemporary trends.
