Abstract

Leadership has always been more challenging during diffcult times, but the unique leadership challenges facing organizations throughout the world today call for an even greater renewed focus on what constitutes “values-based leadership.” In the wake of the economic downturn, fnancial crises and rampant corporate scandals, the feld of leadership has come under heavy criticism from all circles. Many are asking: What good are leaders, anyway? Consequently, increasing attention is now paid to the role and propriety of the leadership function. Some researchers have argued that the infuence of leaders on organizational performance is overrated and romanticized and that programs of training in leadership qualities have become a cult in the Western world.1Despite these assertions, however, it is now widely recognized by researchers and practitioners that leadership is an important function and studies confrm that leaders do contribute to organizational performance.2
