Abstract
I instantly connected with Ma Xiaodong when we first met in Boston. It was a decade ago when she was a graduate student in sociology and I taught history at a local university. It delighted me to find a fellow Beijinger, but more than the common birthplace, it was the parallel experience of our youth in China that made me feel an immediate affinity for her.
