The Alexander S Onassis Public Benefit Foundation establishes and supports public benefit projects, offers services and makes contributions to other public benefit institutions for medical care, education, literature, religion, science, research, journalism, art, cultural matters, history, archaeology and sport. It also awards prizes, grants and scholarships to both Greeks and foreigners.

Onassis Foreigners’ Fellowship Programme Educational Scholarships Category B

Subjects: Greek language, Greek literature, Greek history and civilization.

Purpose: To render possible the acquaintance, collaboration and exchange of information between the scholarship recipients and their Greek colleagues in Greek schools, education or other relevant departments of Greek universities.

Eligibility: Open to active elementary or high school foreign teachers who teach the Greek language, modern or ancient, Greek literature, Greek history and Greek civilization. Only persons other than Greek nationals are eligible. However, persons of Greek descent, second generation and on, are also eligible providing they are permanently residing and working abroad or currently studying in foreign universities.

Type: Fellowship

Value: A monthly allowance of €1,200 plus hotel accommodation and a round trip air ticket

Length of Study: Up to 6 months

Subjects: All subjects.

Eligibility: Open to foreign postgraduate students and PhD candidates up to 40 years of age who pursue studies in universities, scholarly or research centres or fine art schools either outside Greece or in Greece.

Onassis Foreigners’ Fellowships Programme Research Grants Category AI

Subjects: Humanistic sciences, political sciences and the arts.

Purpose: To enable full members of national academies and full university professors whose scholarly or artistic work has been widely acclaimed and who wish to visit Greece in order to conduct scholarly research or to collaborate with educational institutions, research institutions or organizations.

Eligibility: Only people of non-Greek nationality are eligible. However, persons of Greek descent, second generation and on, are also eligible provided they are permanently residing and working abroad or currently studying in foreign universities. Candidates must have had a professional academic career of at least 10 years.

Level of Study: Postdoctorate

Type: Research grant

Value: A monthly allowance of €1,000 plus a round trip air ticket and hotel accommodation

Length of Study: 3–6 months

Frequency: Annual

Purpose: To enable university or equivalent institutions’ faculty, researchers, PhD holders, artists and musicians, and translators of Greek literature who wish to come to Greece either for scholarly research co-operation with a Greek university, research centre or institute or for their artistic creation or translation.

Eligibility: Only candidates who are not Greek nationals are eligible. However, candidates of Greek descent, second generation and on, are also eligible provided they are permanently residing and working abroad or currently studying in foreign universities. Candidates must have had a professional academic career of at least 10 years.
